I preserved numerous images in the water town village of Zhouzhuang on
my first visit to China. Two images seem to work together as a pair.
This second image, which I’ve named “Ancient Motions, #2” preserves the
same silent moment as my first image, except that in this motion the
feeling is coming toward you as the small vessel saunters through the
quiet waters of the Chinese water town. This second scene also preserves
a different sense of depth and lets you feel the strength needed to move
through the water. You may also assume that the woman in the image
moving the boat through the canal is actually singing traditional songs
in the local dialect, They sing softly, adding to the allure. The scene
also preserves the serenity I felt in the other image in Zhouzhuang that
I refer to as “Serenity Preserved”. These ancient water towns as they
are known in China, contain tributaries off of the Yangtze River that
were once trading posts of the Grand Canal. The canal was once the
Middle Kingdom’s main route of transport. These traditional villages
contain historic lanes of cobblestone that today can be traversed with a
bit of awe as you wander along the ancient waterways. Over 900 years
old, these old China towns continue to keep the past alive. The
mystifying alleyways and old-world architecture captivated me into
exploring the town at each turn. I photographed the water scenes in
anticipation of preserving a painterly-type scene, and I felt I was
composing images that I would not have been able to do in any western
city. China is a vast canvas for the artist and this image of the
ancient waterway typifies my photographic brush. Drown softly in the
mood and assume time should be put aside.
