I was wandering through one of my favorite spots in Paris, Place
du Tertre in the Montmarte. At one time, the square was the center of the
village. Famous for its church and artist square both on top of the mountain,
the square is no real hideaway. Yet, I enjoy this hilltop in the city because of
its history, aloofness and a spot where I always seem to have photographs evolve.
Not far from the square is the Cimetiere de Montmartre one of the oldest
cemeteries in Paris. The place bears witness to the artistic leanings of the
area with notable artists such as the composer Berlioz and the filmmaker
Francois Truffaut being buried there. On a rainy, cold and damp February
afternoon, I was walking past a tiny street corner in the square and saw this
tiny table and two small benches in front of Au Clairon Des Chasseurs. It was
typical Paris to me. The sense of Europe is present in the cobblestones and I
was attracted to what appeared to be some swans in the glass as well. After the
exposure, I walked closer to the table, i.e., the subject, and it was then I
noticed the small chain holding the chairs to the table. It didn’t seem
offensive, it seemed decadent and somehow appropriate to the scene. The scene is
named "Les Possibilites", "Possibilities" in English. I was inspired to see in
the photograph a vision of what might be at this vacant and desolate little
table in the midst of bustling Paris… might it be two future passionate lovers,
might it be the possibility of two people having just met, or maybe two elderly
old Parisians just lingering on the tiny corner as they have so many times
before, just to reminisce. Possibilities? … or maybe just another café in the
City of Lights that no one normally would notice, with two tiny chairs rarely
taken.
